Vermi-composting Guide

There are thousands of varieties of worms in existence. For home vermicomposting purposes, the most often recommended varieties are known generically as redworms, or red wrigglers. Individual species include Lumbricus rubellus and Eisenia foetida.

Redworms are used for fishing and, in season, can be purchased from local bait shops in the Calgary area. Because of the different purpose for which bait shops carry redworms, they are sold by them on a number-of-worm basis as opposed to a mass or weight basis. Worms from bait shops therefore cost considerably more than bulk worms purchased from worm farmers.

To obtain a supply of bulk worms, contact Clean Calgary at 403-230-1443.

Requirements

The four physical requirements for a home vermicomposting operation are:

  • a worm bin
  • bedding material
  • a supply of worms
  • a supply of organic scraps
