Waste in Our World

The Waste in Our World workshop is a one hour fun, interactive in class presentation delivered by Clean Calgary Association.
This dynamic presentation will cover:
- Types of waste produced by human activity
- Alternative methods of disposal (reuse, recycling, and composting)
- Waste reduction
- The impacts of different types of packaging
- Making informed consumer choices
- And taking action as individuals and groups to reduce waste
Target Audience:
- Grade 4 students
- One class per workshop for optimal learning achievement
Benefits of this workshop:
- Students will gain a greater understanding of the topic of "waste" through hands on appropriate interactive activities.
- Seven of the twelve "Waste in Our World" learner expectations as outlined in the Alberta Learning Curriculum criteria are directly addressed in this workshop.
- This workshop gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how The City of Calgary deals with waste on a daily basis.
- Students will be encouraged to assess their own waste practices and challenged to make lifestyle changes to reduce their waste at-home and in-school.
By the end of this workshop students will have:
- Identified and classified wastes that result from human activity.
- Identified current methods of waste disposal in Calgary.
- Discussed alternative methods of disposal, including the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
- Identified ways in which materials can be reused and recycled - with a focus on at-home and in-school environments.
- Identified materials and processes that may decrease the amount of waste produced.
- Compared different kinds of packaging and discussed the relative advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Identified actions that individuals and groups can take to minimize the production of waste.
How schools can participate:
Bookings are available through the Clean Calgary Association. The cost to the school for this workshop is $75 for the first class. Discounts available for multiple presentations on one day (not limited to Waste in our World).
